Matawb's Story

Matawb Gul (Moon Flower) is 48 years old.
Matawb’s husband died in the Afghan War with Gulbuddin Hekmatyar 10 years ago. She has seven children whose ages range from 10 to 17 years old. She lives in the home that her husband started to build before he died with four other women relatives — one of which also has seven children. Ahmed, Matawb’s oldest son, who is 17 years, old pulls the karachi (cart) to the market to sell the vegetables his mother grows and the chutney she makes. Because she is still learning to garden, she also asks him to gather other food that the shopkeepers throw away to feed her family.
Matawb dreams that some day she will have enough food everyday for her children and that they will grow up to have jobs.
She says that she is very thankful for the kitchen that PARSA gave to the Widows Garden where she can make the chutney and work with other women.
