Life Skills and Psycho-Social Training for the Disabled

The ability of a disabled person to recover and succeed at their goals is often as much of a function of their perception of themselves and their relationship to being disabled as it is a function of the disability itself. It is also true that around the world so called disabled people are recognized for extraordinary accomplishments. People with disabling conditions that overcome those disabilities and achieve economic independence and social success are powerful examples of what is possible for other disabled clients.

Psychosocial training supports the disabled person in coming to terms with his/her disability and promotes a healthy mental perspective on the future. As a part of our Life skills program component we will be providing workshops in "Psychosocial Training with Focusing" developed by Dr. Patricia Omidian. A highly successful model of training with an approach that incorporates Islam, this training will provide a foundation for support groups to be developed that will assist our clients throughout their participation in our program. Our Life skills component will combine "personal effectiveness" training with concepts that are keys to professionalism such as "accountability" and organizational skills.

Vocational Assessment

The PARSA case manager will work with each disabled patient who opts for this service to identify what work the patient can accomplish taking into account the limitations of their disability, educational level and life circumstances. An individualized skills development and economic plan will be formulated based on this assessment. This plan will support the success of the disabled person in reaching their employment goals. Each client that decides to seek further skill training or education will be supported in selecting a program available in the community. Support and follow up will also be provided to help insure the patient completes his or her chosen training program.
