Paghman Literacy Program

The Paghman Literacy Program started in 2002 as a small program in Paghman. In 2005, under the sponsorship of Catholic Relief Services (CRS), PARSA developed a literacy program that now serves over 400 women in Paghman. The program uses the accelerated learning materials developed by the Afghan Ministry of Education. Each grade takes six month to complete. The ages of students range from twelve to forty.

The classes for first, second, and third grades are held six days a week for two and a half hours. In 2006, there were over 340 students enrolled. The students study the Afghan curriculum of Islam, basic reading and writing, and math.

The classes for fourth, fifth, and sixth grades are held six days a week for four hours. There are over 60 students in the advanced classes. The students study Islam, basic reading and writing, geography, history, math, science, and Pashto. Some of the students will graduate from sixth grade this year. They are excited about their graduation, but they are also sad to finish the program. Many hope that they can continue their studies in the future.
