Story by Amy Woodruff, International Volunteer
ATTENTION Golfers, Fans of Golf, Pros and those who just enjoy chasing the little white ball... or those who just wanna have FUN!! It's a Golf Tournament in Kabul. Adam Smith International is hosting its second annual charity golf tournament. (Bet you didn't know there was a FIRST annual, in fact, did you know there is a GOLF course near Kabul??) Well - there is BOTH. (ALERT the press, Kabul is civilized after all). Here's the score: - Break free of your endless days of drudgery and escape the noise and nasty smells of Kabul city. Venture out in the fresh air near beautiful Lake Qargha to the Kabul Golf Course. - Shotgun tee off starts at 12:00 (noon) on Friday May 22. - Foursomes will play 9 holes, Best Ball. - Foursomes are allowed only one "GOOD" player and MUST have at least one novice- (It's only fair). Those not golfing are encouraged to come enjoy a beautiful day on the links...(or what passes for links in Afghanistan).
Everyone is welcome to join the golfers and fans for a BBQ dinner at the ASI Revenue House in Shash Darak following the tournament. (Exact details to come with your RSVP) Cost for dinner with the fun and exciting Golf Community in Kabul is: $50.00. Please RSVP to mgustav@mac.com. If you AREN'T in beautiful Kabul and can't attend the tournament or dinner, PLEASE, feel free to support PARSA with your donation to support the Bamyan Community Village School. Every penny, dime and dollar is greatly appreciated and will be put to great use.
PARSA's Community Village School
PARSA has been working for the last three years in Panjab in southern Bamyan. We are working through grass roots efforts to bring education, civil society and vocational training to the villages of the Hazarajat through the PARSA Community Village Schools. PARSA provides literacy programs and accelerated learning courses for girls and young women with the hopes of integrating them into the public schools. PARSA also provides Women's Listening Groups to provide women and girls training in critical thinking skills, social skills and on Afghan civil rights issues. This program teaches girls how to integrate and understand these issues and how to incorporate them into their lives. For the younger children, PARSA offers early education classes at each of the community village school sites. In addition, it provides economic development training for women who are considered "head of households" as well as widows. Training includes gardening skills, tailoring and embroidery skills, how to can fruit and vegetables, process dairy products and make cosmetic cream.
Having seen the Golf Course in person, I'd venture to say anyone playing with or without golf skills could give Tiger Woods a run for his money at the Kabul Golf Course. So come out and show your support for PARSA, enjoy a fun afternoon and round out the day with a great meal with a great group of friends.
